About The California Sheep Academy

After completing the Academy, course participants will be able to:
1. Identify target plants to be grazed to determine best time of the year to graze.
2. Apply principles of time control, animal impact, and stock density to reduce fuel loads and invasive species.
3. Assess carrying capacity of brush and forage and develop strategies to adjust stocking rate.
4. Monitor results of grazing by using the indicators of rangeland health to determine whether grazing strategies are meeting desired goals and if any change is needed.
5. Apply principles of animal behavior to reduce handling stress.
6. Determine supplementation needs of sheep.
7. Develop a herd health and breeding program.
8. Develop marketing strategies for different classes of sheep
