Mandarins-Light-On

The horticulture program serves a diversity of crops including tree and vine fruits, vegetables, cut flowers, Christmas trees, nursery and ornamental crops. Most horticultural producers in Placer and Nevada counties farm on small acreages, growing a variety of crops for direct market. Our UCCE horticulture programs address issues of soil management, Integrated Pest Management, crop production techniques appropriate for the foothills, and direct marketing strategies.

UCCE Horticulture and Small Farms Advisor, Cindy Fake, will be on sabbatical leave from July 1, 2009 to April 1, 2010. During this period, I will be working on research and writing projects related to mandarins, agritourism, and vegetable production. Part of my sabbatical program will be visiting mandarin production areas in Morocco, Spain, and Tunisia to learn about their production practices and varieties.

During my sabbatical leave, I will not be available for normal farm advisor duties.  There will be assistance available via phone or e-mail from designated farm advisors in other counties, but on- farm assistance will not be available.

Commercial Growers: please call 530.889.7385 or e-mail ceplacer@ucdavis.edu and our administrative staff will direct you to appropriate resources.

For assistance with home (non-commercial) gardens, vineyards, and orchards, please contact the Master Gardeners. In Placer County call (530) 889-7388; in Nevada call (530) 273-0919 County.
